Fireworks Safety During Summer Celebrations

Fire summer months are unprecedented times for the United States. As we celebrate the 249th anniversary of our nation and all our freedoms, FEMA Region 5 partners in a cross-sector Fire Safety communication with rights for fireworks and fireworks displays.

While the U.S. Fire Administration typically encourages the public to attend professional fireworks shows, this year we recognize the importance of safe sharing guidance on responsible fireworks use.

Fireworks Safety Reminders for Your Community

• Keep Body Parts Away from Lit Fireworks: Never place any part of your body over a firework when lighting it.
• Be Mindful of Pets and Wildlife: Fireworks can frighten pets and wildlife.
• Supervise Children: Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
• Use in a Safe Location: Fireworks should be used outdoors in a clear, open area away from homes, vehicles, dry grass, trees, and flammable materials.
• Dispose of Fireworks Properly: Soak used fireworks in water and place them in a metal trash can away from buildings.
• Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Always read and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
• Monitor the Hazards: Watch for hot debris or embers after fireworks have been discharged.
• Never Relight Malfunctioning Fireworks.
• Check Local Laws: Follow all state and local regulations.
• Be Prepared: Keep a bucket of water, garden hose, or fire extinguisher nearby.
• Think About Fire Conditions: Dry conditions increase fire danger.
• Notify Neighbors: Especially those with pets, children, elderly family members, or veterans.
